1. First start with blank image and switch to channels window>show>channels. Then create a new channel by clicking on this icon in channels palette. Now create the text. For this example I used font Arial Black at 30 pixels size. Deselect [Ctrl + D]

2. Now go to filter>blur>gaussian blur and use radius 2. |

3. Next thing is to press [Ctrl + M] or go to image>adjust>curves and transform the curve to A shape.

4. Here are next two types of curves which I found most useful for this effect:

5. Finally switch to RGB channel and open the layers palette (window>show layers). Create new layer layer>new>layer [Shift + Ctrl + n] and load selection select>load selection. In channel dropdown menu choose Alpha 1. Press OK. Now fill selection with black edit>fill (or [Alt + Backspace]. Deselect [Ctrl + d].
Note: When is background of your channel white, like when you use curve in shape W, you have to check Invert checkbox when loading selection from channel.
